Henry Mathieu

Bio

(In 3rd person) Henry Mathieu is 46, but he reads at a 48 year old level. He’s from Jackson Hole, WY. He studied art at Williams College, and he’s spent most of his career in the adversing industry as a copywriter and creative director. In 2012, Henry and his longtime creative partner, Jonathan Campo, founded Gravy Boat Regatta, an independent advertising and design firm. Gravy Boat Regatta delivers integrated brand design systems, custom websites, advertising campaign creative, and all manner of design services. If you’re here to work with Henry in that capacity, mosey on over to the Gravy Boat Regatta website, or shoot him an email. If you’re here for the paintings, you’re in the right place. Henry maintains an art practice, hopping between the Tetons and the Georgia coast.

Artist Statement

(In 1st person) Broadly speaking, I tend to paint ridge lines, roof lines, and power lines. My art practice is, in large part, an effort to come to terms with the collective will mankind imposes on the landscape. Many of my better paintings depict a tension between the natural environment and the built environment. Rarely do we see an unobstructed view of a vast expanse. We take for granted all the panes of glass, telephone poles, cell towers, cheaply built buildings, guard rails and asphalt that constantly interrupt how we experience our native surroundings. I’m interested in the often awkward, sometimes funny, occasionally beautiful juxtapositions of: economic growth and plant growth, engineering and entropy, suburban sprawl and the sublime.
